Located in southern Tuscany, not far from Rome, Pitigliano is known for its architectural originality:
resting on a high tufa rock, the village merges with the underlying rock creating a stunning backdrop perfected by the impressive Medici aqueduct that rises above the tuff cliff.
In this magical place every era has left a mark, the ancient peoples, who lived there dug into the tuff creating a city under the city made of tunnels, wells, tombs and cellars.
The historic center features narrow streets of the old Jewish ghetto. Pitigliano is in fact known as “Little Jerusalem”, whether because it is reminiscent in appearance to the ancient Holy City, than for the historical presence of an important Jewish community, that has left the village important symbols of their culture (inside the Ghetto you can visit the Synagogue, the oven of unleavened bread and the ritual bath).
Pitigliano was inhabited since Etruscan times: here were founded many settlements dug in tuff. If you decide to visit the archaeological area you can have the chance to walk the streets and admire the fascinating Cave Etruscan (le Vie Cave). But Pitigliano is not only history, there will be opportunity to taste the famous local cuisine and the famous white wine DOC. At this point you can decide whether to stop and relax at the nearby Terme di Sorano or choose the road towards Sovana; the ancient capital of the great feud Aldobrandesco.
Thanks to the beauty of the small town with the Romanesque cathedral, the ancient buildings and ancient medieval fortress, Sovana has been included in the list of most beautiful villages in Italy, where time seems to have stopped in its most prosperous era.
The visit to Sovana can be completed, including also the fascinating Etruscan necropolis with monumental Hildebrand Tomb and the famous Tomb of the Siren, or you can pause to look at the beautiful scenery before resuming the journey back to your destination.
